Julia Nixon* joined AVK UK in October 2018 in the role of Marketing Manager. A graduate of the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) Diploma in Professional Marketing, Julia is a role model for all those looking to acquire new skills as a mature student.
‘I studied business studies at college and then, at the age of 17, went straight into the world of work as a junior administrator. I had a career break to raise three young children and, when I returned to work, I took on a commercial role. It was at this point, over fifteen years since I left college, that I decided to return to education to study for professional marketing qualifications.’
Over a period of six years, Julia has progressed through the Foundation Certificate in Professional Marketing (Level 3), Certificate in Professional Marketing (Level 4) and the Diploma which is equivalent to degree standard; all achieved whilst working full-time:
‘Combining work, study and family commitments at the same time isn’t easy. On occasion, particularly when completing assignments or studying for exams, I have had to ‘lock myself away’ at weekends.
Whilst it has been challenging, I have gained so much from the journey. I now have a greater understanding of the contribution marketing can make at both an operational and strategic level, and acquired knowledge and skills in digital marketing and marketing metrics, measuring the effectiveness of marketing activities. At a personal level, gaining the qualifications has reinforced my self-confidence and given me a structure and focus to help me deliver marketing projects.’
Julia believes her commitment to personal development was one of the factors that contributed to her being nominated for a place on the AVK Leadership Programme. Once she has completed the Academy programme, Julia is planning on studying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing:
‘If someone had told me six years ago that I could potentially achieve a postgraduate qualification I would have stared at them in disbelief. My advice to any potential mature student agonising over whether they would be able to cope is to jump right in and give it a go. You may not have enjoyed education as a teenager, but you’ll find it a totally different experience second time round.’
*Julia is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. Julia is currently working towards Chartered status at both institutions. She is a firm believer in lifelong learning and feels this will become ever more important in today’s dynamic business environment.
Congratulations Julia! 😊
