Preventing Flooding in a Residential Garden

Background - Risk of Flooding

A customer faced a significant risk of flooding due to the potential bursting of a rising main located in a garden. The rising main was under high internal pressure, increasing the likelihood of a burst. An AVK UK wastewater air valve (701/95) was also located within the sealed chamber.

The Challenge - Monitoring Water Levels in a Sealed Chamber

The customer needed a reliable solution to monitor the water level within the chamber and provide early warnings to prevent flooding. The chamber’s sealed cover meant that rainwater could not cause flooding, but a burst rising main or a leaking air valve could.

If the potential risks of a bursting rising main are not addressed, several serious issues could arise as a result, including flooding, resulting in property damage and structural damage, health hazards from contaminated water, environmental impact from soil contamination and loss of biodiversity, as well as financial costs in addressing the aftermath of a flood.

The customer contacted AVK UK for assistance, and a Level sensor was recommended to monitor the chamber’s water level. The Level sensor was installed and commissioned within minutes, offering a quick and effective solution.

Implementation - An Early Warning System

The Level sensor was set up to provide an early warning system. The device monitors the water level within the chamber and sends an alarm to the customer if the water surpasses a predefined threshold. This alert prompts the customer to inspect the air valve and chamber, to then be able to take necessary actions to prevent flooding.

Outcome - An Effective Solution

The Level sensor has proven to be an effective solution for the customer. By providing timely alerts, it helps prevent flooding caused by a burst rising main or a leaking air valve. The customer can now monitor the chamber’s water level and respond promptly to any potential issues, ensuring the safety of a customer’s garden.
