Background - Critical Failure, Rising Main Burst
A customer encountered a critical failure when the rising main - an essential part of the wastewater system - burst inside a chamber housing an air valve. To manage the immediate impact, two tankers were deployed alongside manual checks every three hours.
While this provided a temporary fix, a more sustainable and efficient solution was urgently required. The chamber’s location within a busy airport made resolving the issue a top priority to avoid future problems.
Challenge - Prevent Flooding- Keeping the Airport Operational
The customer required a reliable system to detect potential future bursts and monitor the water level within the chamber. This was crucial to prevent flooding and operational disruptions at the airport.
Solution - AVK Smart Level Sensor
AVK UK was brought in to provide a remote, Smart, digital solution that offers early detection of potential future bursts. The system includes a Smart Level sensor installed in the chamber to monitor flooding and serve as an early warning mechanism.

Implementation - Level Sensor Installation and Configuration
The Smart Level sensor was installed and configured, using digital monitoring, to provide early warnings through the VIDI platform. The customer sets a threshold on the VIDI platform, and when the water level in the chamber exceeds this threshold, an email alert is sent to the relevant parties. This prompt notification allows them to inspect the chamber and address the issue before the water level rises above the chamber lids, preventing further damage and operational disruptions.
Outcome - Digital Alerts for a Swift Response
The Smart Level sensor provided an early indication of potential problems, allowing for a swift response if the rising main bursts or the water level reaches critical levels. This proactive approach reduces the need for immediate repairs and minimises damage, acting as a preventative measure.
Cost-Effectiveness - Eliminates Manual Network Monitoring
The new solution is more efficient and cost-effective, providing timely alerts and eliminates the need for two tankers and constant, 3 hourly, manual monitoring.
